Katie Holmes: Good for the Catholics?

In just two short weeks, Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tome Cruise, left Scientology, signed a divorce agreement with Cruise allowing her custody of their daughter Suri, and embraced Catholicism in a big way.

Holmes was raised Catholic, but left the church to join The Church of Scientology during her whirlwind courtship with Tom Cruise. Last week she joined the parish of St. Francis Xavier in New York City. She also registered Suri with the Convent of the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Manhattan, a school that boasts a whopping $38,000 per year tuition bill.

Will Holmes’ renewed participation in the Catholic Church spark a new public interest in the faith? Only time will tell.  It certainly doesn’t hurt to have a celebrity renounce Scientology and return to Catholicism.  After all, many members of the Church of Scientology found their way there due to the many celebrity members.
